Artist Statement:
'Blacksmithing is one of the world's oldest crafts. For centuries it was the king of trades, through which new discoveries often decided which civilisations succeeded and which failed.
The parent of modernisation, it helped give birth to the industrial world, and therefore played a key role in developing the world in which we now live.
Shortly after the Industrial Revolution, the craftsman known as the blacksmith was quickly replaced by technology and mass production, leaving the trade out of date and overtaken by time.
By drawing on techniques of manufacture employed in industrial forges, learnt during my apprenticeship, with 8 years experience working in some of Europe's best forges, I create contemporary pieces which reflect on our development as a society.
Using a coal fire, a hand hammer and anvil, a 150 tonne press and a power hammer I bring ideas to life with a combination of hand forging and massive deformation with heavy machinery.'
